about

I recorded ‘Lightlessness’ in November 2015 in my home studio. I have a beautiful grand piano and I know this instrument better than any other. My good friend Chris Clayton tuned and prepared the piano for this recording. Graham Gribbin - another long time friend - was always at hand to help with any other things that needed sorting. For a pianist it's wonderful to have one tuner you trust, let alone two!

I set up some microphones and recorded every evening for about 2 weeks, without exception this music was recorded after 9pm, there was an absence of light.

The street light intruded from the window (I could see my hands!). I had a cup of tea, a recording unit and my imagination. Over those few weeks I recorded over 4 hours of improvised piano music. I left the recording for a number of months, purely to become disassociated with the music. When I listened to it again it was like hearing it for the first time.

It took me a number of months to find the music I wanted to include on this recording. I have released four live piano improvisation concerts in the past, no editing possible! This was a different being. I had time to reflect and select what I felt was the most moving music to me, and hopefully to you, too.

The album is essentially about enjoying one sound for more than 2 minutes. The music is soft and delicate and unfolds throughout the recording. It is a reflection of the season, my mood and the absence of light.

This recording project is really the work of three people. I recorded and improvised the music, but I still needed the help of some good friends to complete the finished recording.

My friend (artist) Edward Foster had always said I was welcome to use one of his paintings for the front cover, which I was very excited about. This all changed once I played Eddie the music on CD. He had a vision for the album artwork that fitted so perfectly with mine. As we listened together he described the front cover and then over the following months produced the amazing artwork you see today. I think Eddie has listened the album more than me, in one of our phone conversations he said he had listened it over 40 times!

As the work was recorded at home (I am no recording engineer) it needed to be mixed and mastered for release. That’s when the third and final jigsaw piece of this puzzle stepped in, Andy Thornton. Andy mixed/mastered and prepared the album, making it sound amazing.

Lightlessness has been a journey of awakening, I feel a real closeness to this music. It marks a development in my expedition to document my piano improvisations. I hope it brings you as much pleasure as I had producing it.
